As the 2018/2019 school year winds to a close, we at Crossroads are gearing up for the start of the 2019/2020 school year. Every year, we reflect upon what we can do better and how we can raise community awareness about food insecurity in our local schools. We recently held our annual “Thank You” happy hour with school counselors and social workers. It is our opportunity to thank them for their support but to also find out how we can better serve their students.
Overwhelming, they stated that the students need a mid-afternoon snack. Other counselors expressed concern for siblings that do not attend a Crossroads-supported school. Our team has quite a few decisions to make about how to expand our support. One thing that we know is that the need is great and that we need your help!
This year, we will be holding a community-wide Christmas in July program. The concept is simple. Put up a Christmas tree in a location that is high traffic and convenient, “decorate” the tree with tags that contain a photo and description of a food item, and provide a collection point. At the end of the month (or at a time that is convenient) deliver the food items to Shepherd of the Hills (4090 Sudley Road). In an effort to make this program as easy as possible, we will provide folks with bulletin announcements that can be customized and tree tag templates (or tags if you don’t have time to make your own). If there is something else that you need, let us know…we are here to help!
